Storage: | 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD + 1TB HDD |
RAM: | 16GB DDR4 |
Operating System: | 64-bit Windows 10 Home |
The Orion 3000 is Acer’s refresh of their beastly Orion gaming desktops. This time around, the internals have been refreshed with Intel’s latest Skylake i5 and i7 processors as well as a new Nvidia graphics solution.
Like most gamers I know, my gaming desktop is a few years old. I’ve repurposed it as a test bench for SSDs and to occasionally play games on, but by now the 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9700K that came with it is starting to show its age.
This year, Acer has unleashed several refreshed models, including the Predator G1 desktop which is aimed at being the industry’s slimmest gaming desktop that can still be considered the best gaming PC. Then there’s the Predator Orion 9000 which is an absolute monstrosity of a desktop aimed at enthusiasts who can’t be bothered to build their own monster PCs. That one comes with the latest Haswell-E i7 processors along with two GTX 980s in SLI, but it costs nearly 10 grand.
The Orion 3000 is Acer’s mid-tier offering in the refreshed lineup, replacing last year’s very similar Acer Predator Orion 5000. It comes with most of the goodies that its higher-end brethren have, but it uses Intel’s latest Skylake i5 and i7 processors instead of Haswell-E, and only comes with one graphics card, a GTX 970.
Is that enough for this horrendously large desktop to take on the likes of Origin PC’s Genesis, which is currently my pride and joy? Let’s find out.
The Predator Orion 3000 has a very simple design, but it doesn’t come across as cheap-looking as other gaming desktops I’ve reviewed. It comes with a tempered glass side panel that makes it look quite flashy when you fire up the machine. The two front-facing red LED strips add to their overall sinister look, but I wish Acer had made these LEDs customizable instead of having them light up in one color only.
Above the chassis are five buttons which include power, HDD activity indicator, fan speed up, fan speed down, and a button to switch between graphics card profiles. The top of the chassis also has five rubber feet that keep it in place on my desk when I attempt to fiddle around with it (I’m still using an old Logitech G5 laser mouse that uses USB cables instead of wireless).
Awesome gameplays with nice performance.
Great cooling system.
Stylish from the outside.
Hybrid storage.
RGB lights.
Not affordable for many.

Best Gaming PC Buyer’s Guide
When looking for the best gaming PC, you always need to go through some points that are essential for choosing the right gaming desktop from the market. Let me break down those points for you.
Decide Your Budget
Before choosing the gaming rig, the first and most important part is to decide your budget or collect the money for your next gaming PC if you’re broke. Now the cost depends on the design and hardware of the PC. The high-end gaming rigs are the most expensive ones. By this, I mean that you have to leave behind around $4000 for such a build. In the end, it is worth the price but my suggestion would be to buy a mid-range PC like the ZOTAC Gaming MEK Ultra or Dell Alienware Aurora R10 gaming desktop that comes under the budget of $2000. You can also go below by selecting the iBUYPOWER Desktop Revolt 2 9330 or ROG Strix GA15DH which are under $1500.
Graphics Card
You can’t compromise on the graphics card when looking for a new gaming PC. It must be up to the point because with it you can’t experience the performance you’re wishing for in high settings. Now other components also matter but the GPU is what actually processes all the graphics-related tasks. So it must be better. Some of the few examples are down below:
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
- AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
- ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3070
Processor
The CPU is considered to be the heart of the gaming PC. I am happy to tell you that you don’t need to get worried about the processor here as most of the Prebuilt gaming PCs that I have selected for you come along with powerful CPUs. Some of the good examples are AMD Ryzen 5 3600X and 10th Generation Intel Core i9-10850K. So make sure you get one of the flagships with such a processor that has more processing speed.
RAM
There’s no denying that the RAM is the component that must be strong enough to handle multitasking and heavy programs. Now for a gaming PC, the ideal memory is always 16GB no matter what. But you also need to look for the RAM with the latest technology because the older ones are no longer good for gaming. The new ones can do miracles and satisfy your gaming cravings.
Storage
I am not in favor of the gaming rig that has only the HDD installed on it because they are slow. Of course, they have more storage capacity. But what about a gaming PC that has both an SSD and HDD? it will be better, right? So please make sure to aim for the PC that has hybrid storage in order to have the best gaming performance and more storage capacity for the long run.
Cooling System
A liquid cooling system is almost with all gaming desktops out there and even with the ones I compiled for you. So you don’t need t get worried about this part because your rig is always going to be cool during playing games.
